2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Claims the Towing Crown in Its Category

The award-winning Ram 1500 is already the second most popular truck in Canada, with the 2019 release powering ahead of competitors including the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra.

But important news from Ram could see the half-ton pickup leapfrog the Ford F-150, claiming the number one slot in the Canadian best sellers list.

Introducing the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

New for 2020, the entire Ram 1500 range is now available with the company's innovative EcoDiesel powertrain, taking the model's capability and fuel economy to new levels. Here are just some of the benefits that Ram 1500 buyers can look forward to.

Increased Towing and Payload Capacity

The most outstanding feature of the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is its generously improved towing capacity. Rated at 5,700kg, it's the clear leader in its class, outshining the Ford F-150's 5,227kg and the Silverado's 4,227kg capabilities.

The new Ram 1500 also has an improved payload capacity, boasting a maximum of 925kg compared to the previous rating of 806kg. For comparison, the Ford F-150 can only haul a maximum payload of 747kg, giving the Ram a near-25% advantage.

High-Spec Diesel Performance

Standard Ram 1500s are supplied with either a 3.6L V6 engine on the lower model trims, or a 5.7L V8 at the higher levels. These options are still available, but the 3.0L EcoDiesel turbo engine provides an attractive improvement, particularly at the base trims.

The new mill produces 260 horsepower, up 8% from the previous standard, and a hefty 480lb-ft of torque, an impressive 14% improvement. The power is passed through a new eight-speed automatic transmission, optimized to make the best use of the higher torque.

The improved performance figures show up clearly when towing heavy loads, with the truck showing little sign of strain even as the maximum ratings are neared.

As with earlier years, the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is available in both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations.

Fuel Economy

The EcoDiesel engine also brings significant fuel savings. Official figures rate the Ram at 10.7L / 100km for city driving and 7.35L / 100km on the highway. This is highly respectable performance for a truck in this class, and should produce significant cost savings for a busy workhorse truck.

Off-Road Ability

Ram trucks aren't only for the worksite. The 1500 Rebel variant is specifically designed to give a great off-road experience, and the addition of the EcoDiesel engine option only improves things further. In particular, the higher torque of the new powertrain means the diesel Rebel makes short work of steep inclines and slippery conditions alike.

Interior Comfort

The Ram 1500 already offers a comfortable ride, thanks to interior features such as a 12" touchscreen for the multimedia system. However, the new, quieter diesel engine combines with active noise cancellation technology to provide a smooth, quiet driving experience that's unmatched by any comparable pickup on the market.
